The Bedford school has met all relevant standards across key areas of school life, with inspectors recognising its nurturing environment, positive relationships and commitment to pupils’ learning and wellbeing.
Polam School in Bedford is celebrating the outcome of its latest Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspection, which confirmed that the school met all relevant standards across the areas assessed.
The inspection, which took place from 23 to 25 June 2026, recognised the school’s supportive learning environment, the strength of relationships between staff and pupils, and its commitment to helping children make good progress academically and personally.
Inspectors highlighted the nurturing atmosphere at Polam, reporting that pupils “flourish in the school’s nurturing environment”. They also described pupils as attentive and enthusiastic learners who are curious, focused and motivated in their lessons.
The outcome reflects the school’s emphasis on creating an environment in which children feel known, supported and encouraged to reach their potential.
Supporting every child to thrive
At Polam, positive relationships are central to the school experience. Staff work to understand pupils as individuals, providing an environment where children can develop confidence, curiosity and a love of learning.
The inspection recognised the quality of these relationships and the impact they have on pupils’ engagement and progress.
Teaching was found to engage pupils effectively, with inspectors noting that children make good progress, particularly in mathematics. The report also highlighted the school’s Early Years provision, where nurturing relationships with staff help younger children thrive.
Headteacher Darren O’Neil said:
“We are incredibly proud of the report because it reflects the school that we see every day.
“Polam is a place where children are known as individuals, encouraged to be curious and confident, and where their happiness and wellbeing sit alongside high expectations for their learning.
“I am particularly pleased that inspectors recognised the strength of the relationships between our staff and children.”
A strong commitment to wellbeing and safeguarding
The inspection also recognised Polam’s approach to pupils’ physical and mental health, emotional wellbeing, and social and economic education.
Safeguarding was another important area of focus. Inspectors found the school’s safeguarding arrangements, including those for children in the Early Years, to be robust. Staff were recognised as well trained in their safeguarding responsibilities.
These findings reinforce the importance Polam places on providing a safe, supportive environment in which children can learn, build positive relationships and develop the skills they need to flourish.
